Summer Is Coming: A Care Worker’s Guide to Not Melting in a Welsh Heatwave

Wales is famous for many things: rolling hills, rugby, rain, more rain, and rain that arrives sideways. But every now and then, the weather surprises us with a heatwave, usually lasting 48 hours, but intense enough to make us question every life choice, including wearing black trousers.
So, as temperatures creep up, here’s our officially unofficial guide to staying safe, cool and vaguely functional while delivering care:

🌡️ 1. Hydrate Like You Mean It
Your body is 60% water. During a heatwave, it becomes 40% water and 20% regret.
Bring drinks with you. Bring more than you think. Bring enough to hydrate a small camel.
🏠 2. Airflow Is Your New Best Friend
If it’s safe, ask to open windows or doors. If it’s not safe, stand near one and think cooling thoughts.
🧊 3. Breaks Are Not a Luxury — They’re Survival
Heat makes everyone slower, sweatier and slightly more dramatic. Take breaks when you can. Find shade. Pretend you’re in a Lynx advert if it helps.
🥿 4. Dress for the Weather (Within Reason)
PPE stays on for care tasks, obviously. But outside of that, keep it light, breathable and comfortable. If your clothes feel like they’re plotting against you, they probably are.
🚗 5. Your Car Is Now a Slow Cooker
Crack the windows. Use sunshades. Avoid touching the steering wheel like it’s a hot hob.
Bonus tip: If you leave a bottle of water in the car, congratulations, you’ve made “car soup”.
🧴 6. Sun Cream: Because Lobster Isn’t a Good Look
We love you, but we don’t want to see you glowing like a traffic cone.
🧠 7. If You’re Struggling, Tell Us
Heat affects concentration, energy and wellbeing. We want you safe, hydrated and not hallucinating ice lollies.
☀️ In Summary
Look after yourselves. Look after each other. And remember: If Wales can survive a heatwave, so can you.
(Probably.)
