What means the most to me is seeing the impact I make every single day on someone's quality of life, even through the smallest of gestures. I don’t view care work as just a job; it’s something I do because I genuinely enjoy making life easier for others. This type of work is incredibly rewarding, and the individuals we support truly care about us too.
I’ve had countless meaningful experiences I could write about. On my first day, the feedback from other carers and the individuals themselves reassured me that this job was meant for me. We’re not just people who come in to make a cup of tea, we offer a shoulder to cry on, someone to laugh with, someone to talk to, and much more. Thanks to the training I’ve received, I’m confident in delivering care that’s compliant with all rules and regulations.
Every day I discover new reasons to love my job. One example stands out: an individual had been refusing a hair wash for some time, but with gentle persistence and reassurance, I was able to support her through it. You could see the relief and comfort on her face afterwards, she was so grateful. These are the moments that reaffirm why I do what I do. I love sharing tips and knowledge with fellow carers so they too can make a difference.
While visiting one particular individual, I learned she adores classical music. Since then, I play it during our visits. It lights up her face, and she’ll sit peacefully in the lounge listening. Every time she opens the door and sees me, her face lights up again. I’ve learned that music can have an incredible impact. I once cared for a lady with dementia who didn’t know who or where she was. I put on Elvis Presley, and she sang it word for word. Her mood lifted completely that day. Finding out what someone likes or dislikes is vital to providing quality care and building trust, while always maintaining professional yet friendly boundaries.
I absolutely love my job. Seeing individuals smile and knowing I’ve helped make their day just a little easier is an incredible feeling. I’m proud of the work I do. It's heart-warming to reminisce with fellow carers and long-term clients, some I’ve supported for over five years, as we share happy and funny memories.
Care work is all about teamwork, whether it’s collaborating with other carers or health professionals. This job has given me the confidence to communicate effectively and ensure everyone we support receives safe, comfortable, and person-centred care.
Being able to laugh and enjoy what you do is brilliant. One part of the job I enjoy is cleaning. When we took on a new care package and began weekly domestic visits, the client was over the moon with how much I accomplished in just one hour. Her happiness said it all. I don’t do this work for praise, I do it to make people smile and to genuinely improve their quality of life.
I’ve been working at Care in the Vale since I was 18; I’m now 23. During this time, I’ve learnt about compassion, dignity, responsibility, person-centred care, duty of care, maintaining boundaries, teamwork, leadership, supporting others, and most importantly, making a real difference.
If anyone is considering going into care, I would wholeheartedly say: take the leap. It’s one of the most rewarding paths you could choose.
