It’s Just a Normal Day

We had a little get-together this week to honour and reward these six staff members for publicly sharing some of their experiences while working at Care in the Vale. Thanks to everyone who shared their stories!
When we asked our staff to share some of their experiences, we expected variety. What we didn’t expect was the striking similarity in their responses.
Each one began with a quiet disclaimer: “I don’t do anything special. It’s just a normal day.”
But as their stories unfolded, we saw something else entirely.
We saw Sam, who brought love and connection to a couple separated by illness, and found healing in a moment of unexpected grace. We saw Caroline, who turned her gran’s wisdom into a lifelong mission to bring joy and dignity to others. We saw Ryan, who found friendship in laughter, legacy in a birthday plan, and meaning in every shared moment. We saw Claudette, who discovered that presence, patience, and person-centred care could transform not just others, but herself. We saw Danielle, who found joy in the smallest gestures, from classical music to a clean home, and built trust through kindness and consistency. And we saw Handsome, who stood beside clients in their most vulnerable moments, restoring not just bodies, but spirits.
None of them called their work heroic. None of them sought praise. They simply showed up, with compassion, humour, resilience, and heart.
And that’s the beauty of it. At Care in the Vale, extraordinary care isn’t the exception, it’s the standard. Not because our carers are trying to be remarkable, but because they’ve quietly redefined what “normal” looks like.
This is what care should be. This is what care is.
